Cagliari release coach Allegri for AC Milan
Cagliari have released coach Massimiliano Allegri following a request from giants AC Milan, the website of the Sardinian Serie A club reported on Thursday.
Cagliari had replaced Allegri, 42, over a run of bad results after an encouraging first half of season. Youth-team coach Giorgio Melis took over in mid-April with five games left.
Allegri is now expected to sign with Milan, who have been seeking a new coach after firing Brazilian Leonardo at the end of the season.
'The arrival of Allegri is not yet official because we must still talk with (him),' Galliani said. 'But I have the word of (Cagliari president Massimo) Cellino and this is enough to me.
'Cellino was very kind and I must thank him. I asked him for a courtesy and he obliged. Cagliari did not ask for anything in exchange for releasing Allegri.'
Allegri was at Cagliari since 2008 after five seasons at lower-division clubs. In his two seasons in Sardinia, he twice won the Golden Bench, a prize awarded through votes by Serie A coaches.
Among the previous winners are Marcello Lippi, Fabio Capello and Cesare Prandelli, who is to take over from Lippi as national team coach in July after the end of the 2010 World Cup.
