David Beckham out of the World Cup
England international and on loan AC Milan midfielder David Beckham was injured yesterday in Milan’s 1-0 victory over Chievo Verona. Beckham tore his Achilles tendon despite making no contact with another player and limped off the field under his own power before being unable to move.
The injury has been reported to be very serious and season ending for Beckham’s campaign at Milan. The timetable for Beckham’s return is a minimum of three months, which would rule Beckham out of making the English World Cup squad.
This story is not only terrible news for England fans, but also for football fans in general. No one seemed to care more about playing in the 2010 World Cup than David Beckham did, not only playing full MLS seasons the past few years, but also playing with AC Milan in order to impress England coach Fabio Capello.
Beckham would have been a great addition to the England squad. While his pace is not fantastic, it never was. Getting the chance to watch Beckham with Milan for the past two seasons has shown fans that Beckham is still a fantastic crosser and free kick specialist – and more importantly, a consummate professional.
Beckham would have been worth a spot on the team simply for his guidance and leadership ability for youngster and World Cup newcomers like Jermaine Defoe, Theo Walcott, and Aaron Lennon.
All football fans should hope and pray that David Beckham can recover from his injury, as it would be a shame to see his career end in this manner.
